Woman writing on laptopAre you wondering how to make money from your writing? There are so many ways, I hardly know where to start.

The happy looking young woman in the image to the left seems to have figured it out. She’s happily typing away on her laptop – and you could too.

So for this post, I’m going to focus on getting you to follow in her footsteps – and start writing – fast and faster.

Of course, writing fast and getting paid more for your writing is a huge topic, and I won’t be able to do much more than crack the surface with this one blog post – but I plan to provide more information, starting with the key to the puzzle – helping you write more and faster.

So here’s a fabulous resource that I’ll write more about further down, but just in case you’re impatient or in a hurry, here it is:

Turbo Writing

First, I’m going to cover some of the basics… and provide a few very cool resources that will help you take it to the next level.

So the first thing you need to do to make money from your writing is… write more – and one of the key ways to writing more is writing faster! That’s right! If your writing speed is really slow and it takes you days to compose an article, you’re not going to make much money, no matter how fabulous your article may be. So that’s the first thing I’ll cover.

Next, you’re surely aware of just how little certain writing jobs pay. And so I’ll give you some info and resources on how to boost that income pronto. No 5 bucks articles for you! Let’s get started…

How To Write Faster

The first thing you need to learn if you want to make serious money with your writing is to write faster. And one of the key factors of writing speed is how long it takes you to put that writing on paper – or your screen. And that means, you need a decent writing speed… So what’s your speed right now?

How long does it take you to write a 500 word article on a subject you’re very familiar with?

If it takes you more than an hour, you’ve got to get that speed down. Ideally, you should be able to write at least 1,000 words an hour. Some people can write twice that.

There are several things that go into your writing speed…

The First Key To Writing Faster: Typing Speed

Yup. Typing speed. If you type slowly, you won’t be able to write quickly, no matter how much you try. Unless, of course, you’re using software such as Dragon Naturally Speaking. OR… More about that in the next section. For now, let’s focus on typing speed.

Sooner or later, you will HAVE to type, and the faster you can do it, the faster you can put your thoughts on paper. It also helps if you can touch-type and if your typing is pretty accurate.

What’a good typing speed? Hmmm… The faster, the better.

There’s a cool site where you can test just how fast you can type, and according to them, the average speed is 36 words/minute.

So go there and give it a try:

http://www.typingtest.com

What’s your typing speed? I just tested mine, and it’s 65/minute, and the website tells me that I’m saving 4.5 hours a week if I’m typing 10 hours a week.

Hmmmm. The math is a bit puzzling. Does it mean if I have a typing assignment that would take the average typer 10 hours a week, I could do it in 5.5 hours? Probably.

Either way, you can see the benefits of being able to type fast. If you don’t know how to touch type, make an effort to learn it. Once you’ve mastered that, you’ll get faster and faster the more you write.

The Second Key: The Speed Of Actually Creating Your Content

Aside from typing speed, the other factor that’s key is how long it takes you to come up with whatever it is you’re going to type.

And there are ways to speed things up. Here are a few that work for lots of people:

1) Plan what you want to write

The first thing is to plan what you want to write. And then… make some kind of outline that will basically guide you along as you write.

Exactly how to outline is up to you. You have several options:

a) Traditional outline
b) Mindmapping with software
c) Mindmapping with pen and paper

I highly recommend that you pick one of these and go for it.

2) Deal with “Writer’s Block”

If you’re suffering from writer’s block, there are a few things you can do to overcome it…

a) Just write without worrying about how good your writing is.
b) No editing allowed
c) You do not have to start at the beginning
d) Have fun with writing a “sh***y” first draft

Well-known writing teacher Anne Lamott (“Bird by Bird”) coined that last phrase, “shitty first draft”. She points out that just about everone’s first efforts are pretty darn bad. And that’s okay.

The key is to put stuff on the page, and THEN you can work with it, edit it, and make it pretty.

Here’s the “secret”: You have to parts to your brain: The writer’s brain (creative) and the editor’s brain (critical). They don’t work together at the same time. So don’t even try.

You’re either writing – OR you’re editing. Never try to go back and forth or you’ll mess up your mommentum.
