How To Make New Year’s Resolutions Work

Please Share 🙂

New Year Exercise Resolution. It’s the time of making New Year’s Resolutions, and I’m sure you have some all lined up. But before you go overboard, I want to ask you a question: How have they been working for you? Read on for a slightly contrarian take on how to make New Year’s Resolutions work:

You’ve probably heard all about goalsetting…

Make sure they are specific, measurable, and achievable, but a bit of a stretch. Well, yes. Not bad. But most of those goals end up abandoned not far into the New Year.

Another idea about a goal is to make it big enough to be exciting. Well, there’s the same problem.

The problem with New Year’s Resolutions

Think back to all your New Year’s Resolutions in years past. Or maybe just last year’s. How long did they last?

Even those who actually achieved their goals – to a point – probably broke their resolutions at some point (or at several points) and then picked themselves up and continued. That’s something worthy of patting yourself on the back for.

But here’s the big problem…

Think about what happens if someone promises something to you and then doesn’t deliver? It’s seriously disappointing.

What does it do to you and your relationship with that person? It erodes your trust in them.

Now consider what happens if YOU are the “other” person as you make a promise to yourself…

Every time you promise yourself to do something – and then don’t deliver on that promise – you erode your trust in yourself. And that can’t be good!

If you have big plans and want to achieve success, you have to have confidence that you can do it, and if you let your failed New Year’s Resolutions nibble away at your confidence, you’re eroding your ability to succeed.

That’s bad news!

And that leaves us with the big question:

How can you make New Year’s Resolutions Work?

Here’s the challenge: You have to have resolutions you can KEEP. Without bullying yourself. Keep without fail.

And how can you accomplish that? By starting SMALL!

That’s right!

Instead of resolving to work out for 1 hour every day, set yourself a much smaller goal, a goal you CAN keep no matter what, and one that you’re totally committed to keeping.

Make it a small one, but one that lets you move into the right direction. When it comes to exercise, you could resolve to work out 5 minutes six days a week. And then stick with it!

What, you say… 5 minutes! What difference is that going to make?

Well, it can make a big difference. You get into the habit of actually exercising every day. And most of the time, once you get started, you may as well continue for a while longer, and before you know it, you have walked or run 20 minutes, half an hour, or more.

And if you go to a gym to get in your 5 minutes of weight training, you probably stay and do a few more machines or other exercises.

The most important part is that you do not ever skip your commitment. That builds your inner self’s faith that you’re able and ready to deliver on your promises. And that’s the key to ultimate success, with exercise, and with many other goals you have.

A 7-Step Plan For Achieving Success

You may think that this 5-minute method will only work for exercise and related items. Maybe meditation too.

But how can you generate mini goals for success?

You can. It requires a bit of planning and thinking, but if you have great resources with step-by-step action plans, it can definitely get done.

Step 1: Find a goal you want to achieve

The first part is to decide on one goal (okay, maybe two at the most, such as a personal goal and a business and/or career goal). Make sure it’s something you really want to achieve and are willing to commit to for a pre-determined amount of time.

Step 2: Visualize your goal

Envision yourself moving towards your goal and achieving it. great plan that will guide you towards it. Imagine having the emotions you’ll feel once you have achieve it. Get your mindset in gear!

Step 3: Make the commitment

Promise yourself to stick with this goal until you have achieved it (or until you have reached certain milestones, depending on the goal).

This part also includes identifying potential obstacles and blocks and make a plan on how you will handle them.

Step 4: Divide it into very doable action steps

As in the exercise example, the key is to work towards your goal EVERY day, or at least 5 days a week (i.e., all weekdays), in order to get into the habit of doing this daily.

To make sure you have no excuses, you need to make each minimum step small enough that you can do it no matter what. Doing so will ensure that you push through any obstacles that might come up.

For example, if you’re about to fall into bed at night without having done your daily tasks, make yourself get back up and spend those 5 or 10 minutes on your computer to write your 100 words or whatever you promised yourself to do.

If you were to commit to an hour, you’d be likely to break your vow, sooner or later, and your faith in yourself would begin to erode…

But keep those minimum commitments small enough, you’ll push on until you achieve your goal.

Step 5: Continue day after day

The key is to continue on, and, whenever possible, do more, depending on your schedule, or maybe do a LOT more than your minimum requirement.

Step 6: Reward yourself

Every week and every month, look back and give yourself credit for having stuck with your minimum requirement. Take stock of what you have achieved. Reward yourself, with a pat on the back or maybe more. Decide on those rewards in advance so you can look forward to them.

Step 7: Decide on the next step – and add it to your commitment

Once your minimum becomes a habit, or once you have reached a pre-determined milestone, you can experiment with adding extra time, but don’t go overboard. It’s more important to unfailingly meet your commitment than to try to do better and end up pushing yourself too hard – and failing.

Bonus Step: Find the perfect tools

There are many tools you can use to help you on your path. Some of them are resources that will help you with figuring out your goals and the steps you need to take to get there.
