It sounds a bit cold, but here’s the thing.  Twitter lets you only follow so many more than follow you.  So you need to be able to unfollow some of the people you followed who don’t follow you back so that you can follow others who WILL follow you back.

It’s all about reciprocity after all.

So how do you know?

Easy.  Just go to the section with the people you’re following — and everyone who has the “private message” sign next to their name is following you.  Anyone who doesn’t have that sign is not following you back.

Now don’t go and unfollow them all right then and there. You usually start looking in the newest area, and so they may not have had time to follow you back yet.  But if it’s been a couple of weeks, you may want to unfollow them.

There’s also a cool tool that makes the whole manageing followers thing even easier:

Just be aware that it will take a while until the thing loads.  A LONG while.  Be patient.  It’s worth it.

Because once it’s loaded, you’ll see all the people you follow and all those who follow you — specially marked, and you can instantly tell which relationships are mutual and which ones are one-sided, and you can take efficient remedial action.

You can unfollow all those who are not following you back. Though yhou may want to make an exception for the more recent additions and also certain people whom you follow because you’re interested in what they have to say — or you want to nurture a relationship with them.  Give them some time….

And then, just as efficiently, you can follow all those who are following you whom you haven’t followed back.

Just add a check mark next to their name and click the “bulk follow” button at the bottom of the screen.  For unfollowing people, do the same thing and hit the “bulk unfollow” button.  Make sure you’re doing this in two separate go-arounds!

One thing you should know: it won’t show what you did until you come back later.  However, once you get back to Twitter, you’ll see the difference immediately.

So if you want to make room for more people you can follow, just go to Twitter Karma and take care of it in minutes…
